You already have a known allergy and therefore want to observe certain conditions when searching for an apartment. However, the label “allergy-friendly” does not yet answer whether a specific offer matches your medically clarified needs. A combination of understandable medical questions and actually verifiable information about the property is helpful.
This article provides editorial organisational guidance for searchers in Austria and Germany. It does not diagnose an allergy, recommend a treatment or confirm a safe apartment. Personal health matters belong in individual medical consultation.
Do not search by a general label
The Umweltbundesamt describes different allergy-triggering substances and points out that contact with common environmental allergens such as pollen or components of house dust can hardly be completely avoided. Knowing the specific triggering substance is important. [UBA]
For your search this implies a limited practical task: clarify with your treating specialist which actual information about the residential environment is relevant to your situation. A general wish for a “healthy apartment” is not a sufficiently specific evaluation task. Conversely, a single visible feature does not replace a personal medical assessment.
Turn clarified needs into answerable questions
Assign the required information to the actual offer. Is it about existing fixtures, materials, a particular previous use or another concretely identifiable point? Ask preferably about the factual circumstance and not for a comprehensive medical clearance from the letting or selling party.
Our recommendation: phrase for example “Which floor surface belongs to the offered unit, and is it to be changed before moving in?” instead of “Is this apartment suitable for every allergy?”. The first question can possibly be answered with a concrete description. Whether the answer suffices for you will be assessed based on your individual needs.
Keep known, suspected and unresolved matters separate
Note which information you actually received and what it is based on. A verbal statement about previous use is a different level of information than an attributable document about a carried-out measure. If the responsible person does not know something, it remains unknown for the time being.
Do not demand unnecessary health information about previous occupants. For your factual question it is not their personal diagnosis that matters, but the relevant characteristic of the offered rooms. Nor do you have to tell every contact in your search a full medical history. Clarify specifically which practical information you need and with whom personal health questions should be discussed at all.
The viewing is not a stress test
Schedule an appointment based on the individual professional advice you have already received. A short stay without symptoms does not in itself prove long-term tolerability. Do not attempt to intentionally trigger a reaction to “test” the apartment on your own initiative.
If an examination is necessary for a crucial property question, it should be professionally planned to suit the actual subject. The article does not recommend any arbitrary measurement package or any unauthorised sample collection. Medical assessment, building findings and your housing decision are connected, but different tasks.
Hypothetical case: a term is replaced by concrete information
Jana reads about an allegedly allergy-friendly apartment. For her it is initially unclear what the provider means by that. She asks about the actual fixtures and about a planned change before moving in. It becomes apparent that the description refers only to a single feature.
Jana gathers the information relevant to her known needs and discusses outstanding health questions with her specialist. She does not declare the apartment safe on the basis of the advertising wording or an inconspicuous short appointment. As long as a decisive condition remains unresolved, she takes this uncertainty into account when making her choice.
A sound decision needs a recognisable boundary
You do not have to personally investigate every conceivable environmental influence. You need a comprehensible position on the points that are essential for you and should know which question remains open. This way medically clarified needs are not replaced by blanket housing promises – and the search remains a traceable selection decision with appropriate individual advice.
