Son Cós is one of the largest historic Mallorcan estates, located between the places Sa Cabaneta and Pòrtol, and only a few minutes from Palma.
Until the end of the 19th century the property was used for livestock farming. Afterwards attention was focused on agricultural production, especially of almonds, carob, olives as well as of wheat and vines, in order to produce oil and wine from the harvest.
Today the Son Cós estate is approx. 200 Cuarteradas (143 hectares) in size and almost exclusively almonds and carob are cultivated and sheep are bred. A proof of this is the planting of about 10.000 almond trees during recent years.
The house in the central area of the plot offers a magnificent view over Sa Cabaneta, the church of Sant Marçals as well as over the western part of the Sierra de Tramontana and the town Palma.
In front of the main facade in the austere classical style a path and a large stone terrace lead to the central courtyard, which is reminiscent of the grand patios of the town palaces of Palma. Along the main facade there are some outbuildings that serve as storerooms and under which is the stone-made, unique “Tafona” (storage tank for olive oil) as well as the wine cellar, which was in use until the 40s, and the cowshed.
There is also a smaller hunting ground, which is properly registered.
The most astonishing and authentic building is the chapel, which impresses with its baroque style and which has been dedicated to the Mare de Déu since its construction.
